My year at Head Start gave me two things-a love of books and reading and my first sense of community outside of my street. And, because no one in my family had ever gone to college, there was no real understanding of what it takes to get there. You see, there wasn’t much time to plan for the future, think about college and beyond. I come from a single parent home where there was much love, much struggle and much focus on keeping your head down, staying the course and doing your best to get by. I am grateful to the Head Start program at School 6 in Dunkirk, NY for opening many windows of opportunity for me that I may not otherwise have had. We’re all too familiar with the challenges kids who grow up in poverty face and how we have a steeper road to climb. We Head Start kids have something in common-we share the experience of growing up with limited means and because of this-there’s the possibility that the lack of resources will limit the choice’s we’re able to make and cut short the opportunities that cross our paths. Looking back over the path I’ve chosen, my career and the choices I’ve made-it all really began in Head Start. This program is so valuable to our children their families and our communities!! I am now a 40 hr a week assistant teacher and just recently received a scholarship to receive my CDA degree which the Head Start program helped me achieve through online classes and trainings. I started off as a center associate working just 15 hrs a week to help out as needed. My time as a Head Start parent was great and it has now turned into me being at staff member at the same school both my daughters attended. Then my other daughter who is now almost 6 also attended for 2yrs. I loved it as well as all the kids and staff there. Head Start makes you and your family feel right at home and included in everything that goes on! I would go to my daughter's classroom and volunteer from time to time. The atmosphere was great and all the staff were wonderful. We were trying to find affordable preschool for her. Head Start was just the place for us! Everyone was so accommodating and so helpful guiding us in the right direction. I cannot begin to explain what a great program Head Start is! I first had heard about Head Start when my oldest daughter who is now 7, was just turning 3 yrs old.
